Well, a very simple thing is to notice if any message has been checked as read and interestingly, you did not read it. As a user, you must have a clear idea of the messages you have read and have not read. Sometimes, the hacker might want to take complete control of your email account by changing the password. If the notification of password change reaches you and you have not made the changes then it is for sure that someone has tinkered with your account.
