How to use 7zip for Compressing Windows Files

We all know that 7Zip is one of the high compression ratios, open source software which helps to reduce file size. It is one of the useful free compression tool, allows saving your hard-drive space, send files via emails etc. In this tutorial, you are going to see that how to use 7zip to compress files like music, documents and videos. Let’s see how to compress using 7Zip compressor software.

Things Needed
  1. Computer
  2. 7Zip File Manager
  3. Study Files (e.g. music, documents or videos for compressing task)

Step-1 First, open the 7Zip compression software by double clicking 7Zip icon from desktop or start menu. Then you can see 7Zip user-interface shown below. If you don’t have this compression software click here to download 7Zip Manager.

Double click 7Zip icon (from Desktop or Start menu) >> 7Zip User-interface  

Step-2: From user-interface you can see my computer, documents, networks and other options like add, extract, copy, move etc. First go to the destination folder via 7Zip user interface, and select the files (Music, videos or documents) for compression is shown below. Browse your files via user-interface >> select files as you want to compress by clicking them. 

Note: If you want to select one or more files use “Ctrl” form keyboard. Step-3 Select files and click “Add” button. From the pop-up menu you can set the option for getting better compression, compression formats, compression methods, encryption etc. For getting better compression ratio:
  • Archive format: 7z
  • Compression level: Ultra
  • Compression Method: PPMd


Click “OK” button and compression is done within few minutes. Miscellaneous steps You can also set the password under encryption part. Choose highly secure password, if you want to protect your files from unauthorized users. You can also split bigger size files into small parts such as 10 MB, 650-CD,700-CD and 4480-DVD. You can create SFX files and shared files compression by checking the preferred boxes.
